The -L Company was founded in 1981. Its first commercial operation, the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, originally based in Boston, opened for business in 1989. In 1995, corporate headquarters and all business operations were relocated to San Diego where the companies operate today.

In addition to selling fine mystery books through First Edition Mysteries and providing mystery book reviews at Mysterious Reviews, both divisions of the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books Company, the -L Company continues to expand by providing current and archival information on mystery books to the reading public through highly targeted websites.
